The Case of the Missing Finger!

Hello fellow Space Orangutans. It has been a while since our last update because I really wanted to hold off until we had some substantial screenshots of Gun Slave before we updated you all. However, there have been some interesting developments that I'd like to share before then.

First thing that you've missed is that I have partnered with an old friend of mine for the project. Eric Martin has been a programmer for something like twenty years. I probably should have asked him exactly how long its been before posting this but i'm feeling lazy right now. He is somewhat of a genius and extremely overqualified for the project in my opinion but i'm very thrilled that he wanted to join the team.

So last week I was trying to come up with an idea that would help to set our Gun Slave character apart from other FPS games characters. Because the thing you see most of your character is his/her hands, I decided I needed to do something a little different with the hands. I realized that the best way to do that would be to give the hands some kind of defect, or sentient parasitic growth. While talking it over with my wife she said something that changed the course of this game forever. When I told her that it could be something as simple as a missing finger she asked if it could be a fresh wound and with that one question my imagination exploded.

Now the player character will have a missing finger that is a fresh wound. The wound is corrupted by something that emits a red glow and the blood from the wound is slowly corrupting even the armor on the characters hand and forearm. The story that unfolds, the protagonist's motivations, the enemies the player faces and even the players abilities that they unlock are all centered around this strange injury.

And now we get to the reason that there is no concept art of this new wonderful idea. Just three days after my wife and I originally came up with this idea and only minutes after imagining what special abilities would come from this mysterious missing finger injury, I experienced a freak accident that severed part of my right middle finger. Halfway down the top section of the finger had been crushed against a 90 degree metal surface, severing most of the skin, completely ripping out the fingernail, and braking through the bone. The top half of that section of the finger was only hanging on by a small piece of skin. My injury seems small when compared to the almost entirely missing finger of the protagonist but the parallels between the concept and my injury and the timing between them are compelling to say the least. It is easy for me to get caught up in trying to figure out what that might mean and how unlikely the odds of that happening are. Once or twice, I've even wondered if I subconsciously made it happen in some twisted attempt to understand what the protagonist might be going through. These thoughts plague my mind almost nightly but I do actually relish in the fact that I can partially relate to such an injury. I am extremely excited to draw out the concepts but my finger is covered in a bulky splint that makes it nearly impossible to draw out the concepts, so new concept art of the protagonist's hands will have to wait a few weeks. That fact is more painful to me than the injury ever was.

(A less gruesome image of the injury as the fingernail is being put back in place over the majority of the laceration.)

Shotgun Concept Poll Read

Concept Voting Poll for the Gun Slave Shotgun is now open in the forums. Cast your vote now to decide the visual direction of what will probably be one of the most commonly used weapons in the game.

Behold, our first concept poll winners.

We have our first concept voting rounds completed and are ready to move on to the next round for each of these. There are still two more polls to come out for these but we are now starting to catch glimpses into the future of what this game is going to look like.

Now the next voting round for these concepts will be different variations of the winners. So, for instance, the armor will be three or four different versions of the Hunter armor for us to vote for.

It's Friday the 13th

Happy Jason Voorhees day! As it turns out, Jason is a big fan of what we are all making and he was willing to send out a message for us.

Jason: "Today last day to vote first round Character Armor and Pistol concept. Go vote or go jump in lake."

We do recommend you go vote for your favorite concept... But we highly recommend that whatever you do, don't jump in that lake. *dire look on his face* In fact, you should avoid that entire area all together.

Gun Slave Title

posted May 11, 2016, 10:22 AM by Mitchel Tatafu   [ updated May 13, 2016, 10:36 PM ]

We now have our logo for Gun Slave, our video game project that is currently in the early stages of the design process. The release of this logo is significant because it is the first finished game asset and serves as the banner of the project and final product.

I skipped voting on the game's title logo because I felt that we needed the design sooner than voting phases would have allowed. This logo will effectively act as the design core to many of our future design decisions and it serves us all the most to just get it out there for us all to consume.

Feel free to create a topic in the forum to give feedback on the logo. I look forward to any constructive criticism that any of you might have for the logo.

New Monster Concept Poll

A new monster concept poll has opened in the forums. This is our first monster concept to be available for voting on so go to the forums and vote. Gain your bragging rights now to be a part of this project from the beginning.

The concept that is not elected will NOT be put in the game. Only the winner will have the right to exist.

Facebook Guess What Contest Winners!

These are the winners of our facebook "Guess What" contest last week. Their prize was a space orangutan lemonade. I totally didn't photoshop the logo onto those cups.

Liberty (left) was waiting for us at the Bridge of Death and wasn't going to let us pass until we gave her the lemonade.

Tina (right) wasn't home so we had to track her down. We eventually found her hiding in the garage of a vacant house. She at least looked happy to have her lemonade.

Thank you two for participating in the contest. I hope you enjoyed the lemonade.
